Hot Tub Chemicals For Cloudy Water

Have you recently drained and cleaned your hot tub only to find the water is cloudy?

Treating cloudy water can be frustrating for a spa owner. With a little investigation, a small amount of science know how, and the right hot tub chemicals, it can be fixed.

Cloudy water is usually caused by water that is out of balance or bacteria.

Generally, the best place to start is to test the water to see if it is out of balance. Here are things you should test:

Water balance

Alkalinity, pH, and Calcium Harness should be checked to ensure they are at the right levels. If they are not, balancers should be used to adjust the water back to the right level. There are a variety of balancers you can use such as pH Up, pH Down, alkalinity increaser, alkalinity decreaser, and calcium hardness increaser. Each brand of chemicals has its own version of these products, so make sure to find the one that works best for you.

Sanitizer level

Many hot tub owners prefer to use bromine over chorine for sanitizing their hot tub. Both sanitizers work equally effectively, but if there isn’t enough to fully decontaminate the water you can be left with a murky tub.

Check the sanitizer level, and if it is low, add additional sanitizer, circulate it through the tub by turning on the jets, and check again later.

These steps will help clear up cloudy water caused by out of balance water or bacteria.

If the water is still cloudy, it may be due to contaminants in the water, such as hair products, lotions, and makeup.

Add a clarifying product to your hot tub to help break down and neutralize contaminants. Shock (aka oxidizer) can help clear cloudy water, as well as a product like Bright&Clear by Leisure Time.

Run the hot tub with the jets on and then wait 24 hours. If the cloudiness has improved but is still somewhat cloudy, an additional application may be required.

No one likes to sit in a cloudy hot tub. With these easy steps, your cloudiness should be gone in no time.
